Dota matchmaking level
You can meet the best arena players on rating playing on their altsbut you can also get people who don't matchmaking level know how to move their character. My guess is valve has it similarly to the ranked system speed dating pitfalls your first few matches are calibrating, meaning you are dropped into different brackets and then the system tries to adjust based on the matchmakings.
Secondly, almost everyone whom have migrated from Dota 1 have been through this phase - getting stomped and thrashed and flamed when they started playing Dota 1, I don't see why it should be any different for Dota 2.
So, I have played a couple of SK games, still have some issues with him, like he is difficult to make decisions with, since if you don't know your team can be level, you don't really go in balls deep with your ult, like you should. I believe only one person in the entire game knew even how to buy items.
Nobody really knows what the average MMR is, but the last thing i heard was that 3k MMR is already slightly above average. Everything will be abbreviated.

Smurf detection is still in place, however, so new accounts with higher-than-usual stats will be matched according to skill level instead of sheer game count. It's like those who claim level people in BF3 are not good.
